Cupping Therapy

Cupping Therapy

Cupping therapy has recently become more recognized with the treatment seen in the Rio Olympics, particularly the swimming events. Cupping has been around for a long time and was used with glass cups and an open flame to create the suction. The therapy  continues to be practiced this way however it also can be applied using a vacuum suction. At our office we use a hard comfortable plastic cups and a hand held vacuum to create the suction. Once the suction is made the cup(s) are left on the skin for 8-10 min. and can also with lubrication be moved over the skin. We use this therapy to decompress the effected muscle(s), tendon(s), ligament(s) and fascia. Increased blood flow and the break up of adhesions caused from scar tissue is an added benefit.  As seen in the picture below, these cups will typically leave a bruised circular mark  which can last 2-7 days and sometimes longer. This therapy is used for sub-acute (greater then 24hrs) and chronic  injuries such as….

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Tennis/Golfer's elbow
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Knee pain
  • Hip pain
  • Shin Splints
  • Ankle sprains
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • IT band syndrome aka ITB (Iliotibial band syndrome)
